Hiring a Professional to do the work

Trying to repaire water damaged areas can be a very difficult task, but it can be done yourself if you have the proper instructions, however it is not recommended for the average homeowner. If you do not think you can do the project, hire a professional to do the work. Typical damages to the interior of your home from water leaks or flood are often extended beyond what you can see. Wet drywall often only covers up more extensive damage to floors, wood molding and baseboards. If you decide to go with a professional restoration company to fix the damage, make sure you do a background check and ask for referneces to isure your peace of mind. A quality company or individual will have the experience to fix the damaged area, cutting your loses and getting the job done in a timely manner.

When the contractors arrives to assess the damages, they will give you an estimate of what it is going to cost to repair the damaged areas. The contractors will bring the right tools and material that they will need to fix the water damages. When they start the work it is best to stay out of the way. This prevents accidental trips or falls or just plain agitating the contractor. Let the professional do his job, however, sometimes they will let you help them to get the job done sooner and also you will learn how to fix it if it happens again. If you decide to help make sure you wear protective gear and possibly safety glasses if needed.

Prepare for the job with protection and safety in mind

Before the job gets started you want to make sure that any furniture or antiques that you have around the damaged area is covered up or moved. Roll up any rugs that you might have in the area so all of your things are protected from dust and debris that might in the area that you are working on.

If the water damaged area is around any part of the wall with electricity, you will want to shut off the appropriate breaker or power switch. Sometimes the seaping water can run into the light switch or wall socket box and if your are standing in a wet or damp area, you may be in danger. You want to always be safe when working around electricity. It's far better to work with a droplight if needed and be safe.

After you cleanup the water and all of the other debris from the area, you will need to do a thorough cleaning of the floors and the freshly repaired area. You also want to make sure that there is no mold growing on the walls or anywhere else in the house. Mold can make everyone sick and can be a health hazzard. After the job is done, ask the contractor if they have seen any other structural flaws due to the water damage. If there is more damage, you can get it fixed and avoid any disasters in the future.
